For Halloween this year, Hudson wanted to be a Ghost Buster so I decided to fit the theme and make Ellie and I ghost costumes. I searched the internet for adorable (non-scary) mommy-and-me ghost costumes, and I was coming up empty-handed. Cue a #DIY project!
I wanted our costumes to be versatile weather-wise because on Halloween in Texas the weather will either be 90 and sunny or 50 and rainy. I decided to go with a short-sleeved leotard for Eleanor that I can put black pants over, and an over-sized white t-shirt for me that I can also wear black pants and a black long-sleeved top underneath if needed. I was very happy with how these turned out, and I also had several people ask me how I made the stencil, so I decided to share.
First, I found a cute ghost face to use as my stencil and printed it out as the correct size for each costume. To change the size, I copied the image into Microsoft Word and adjusted it.
After printing each face, I traced the outline with a pencil onto the dull side of freezer paper. Freezer paper has a wax side and a non-wax side. Then, I cut around the traced ghost face to make a stencil for the paint.
I then put a paper bag/cardboard between the two layers of each clothing item to prevent the paint from bleeding through the back. After placing the stencil WAX SIDE DOWN where I wanted on the leotard and t-shirt, I used an iron on LOW HEAT to secure the freezer paper to the fabric. This step is important because it keeps the stencil in place during the painting process and stops the paint from spreading.
Then use a brush, I used a sponge brush, to paint the ghost face onto the fabric and allowed the paint to dry overnight before removing the stencil. The freezer paper stencil should peel off of the fabric very easily. Finally, for a little added decoration, I outlined the black paint with glitter paint. Voila!
Here are a few photos of how they turned out! Eleanor had a white tutu to wear with her costume, but she kept screaming bloody murder when I would bring it near her. She was a cute ghost regardless with her ghostbuster big brother.
Yours, because we are His,
Jenna
