Gratitude for Stillness

Dear God,

The world has changed in what feels like the blink of an eye. Our day-to-day routines have been up-rooted, and humanity faces uncertainty. Now that the shock of change has worn off, instead of expressing concern I want to offer an expression of gratitude. For You, Lord, bring YOUR good and YOUR will out of everything. Everything. Period.

Your creation has been forced to slow down and abandon the altar of busyness. In the midst of something terrible, you are giving us the gift of family.

You heard my husband and I whisper in the darkness after a busy day. That we were tired. That we missed each other. That we long for the days where we had nowhere to go, and could just sit around in PJs while the snow fell outside.

You heard us moms express how weary we felt; how our schedules just kept moving and we feel like we can’t keep up. Social engagements and activities and obligations. Too much we said.

You heard my heart cry out that my babies were growing up too fast, and I felt like the world wouldn’t stop moving so that I could cherish them.

You heard me wish I “had what it took to homeschool”, but I didn't take the time to really learn how.

You saw the world getting faster and faster, trying to keep up with each other.

Lord, thank you for giving me this time. Time to stare at my children’s cherub faces, listen to their stories, and hold them in stillness. Time to lay on the couch with my husband and get actual face time. Time to literally watch the clouds pass by and count rocks. Time to see if I’m worth my salt as an educator and become a homeschooling mom. Time for Matt to lead us in family church on Sundays. We are calling it 'Metho-lic' (Methodist- Catholic) and it's going to be awesome.

Father, thank you for the gift of time. Time for You. In the absence of busyness and scheduled lives, You are going to move into the void. Where You’ve always belonged. The world has been brought to its knees, and we can fully see how much we need You.

We know in advance that this crisis will not last, this is a valley that You will lead us through. You already know how and when this ends. You will see us through this, and carry us until we can stand on our own again.

Great is Thy faithfulness.

Your daughter,

Jenna
